Benefits of PDGM in Marketing

Marketing helps businesses to grow and prosper: Marketing is the backbone of a nation’s economy. It plays a crucial role in stimulating demand for products and services, thereby resulting in growth of an overall GDP. It also provides employment opportunities to millions of people and improves the quality of life for the masses.  The success of any business lies in its marketing strategy. Most aspects of business depend on successful marketing and its implementation. The overall marketing umbrella covers advertising, public relations, promotions and sales. Marketing is a process by which a product or service is introduced and promoted to potential customers. Without marketing, a company may offer the best products or services in the market, but none of the potential customers would know about it. Without marketing, sales may crash and companies may have to shut down.

Spreading Awareness: People are more enthusiastic than even before to know about the products and services they want to buy. For a business to succeed, the product or service it provides must be known to potential buyers. Unless the business is known in the community and have effective communication system in place to interact readily with the customers, you have to use marketing strategies to create awareness about the products or services. Without marketing, your potential customers may never be aware of your business offerings and your business may not be given the opportunity to progress and succeed. Using marketing to promote your product, service and company provides your business with a chance of being discovered by your prospective customers.

Improved Sales: Firms can hope to sell only when the prospective buyers know about it. Once the product, service or company gets on the radar screen of the prospects, it increases the chances that consumers will make a purchase. As awareness becomes a reality, it is also the point where new customers start to spread the word, telling friends and family about the amazing new product they discovered. Sales will steadily increase as the word spreads. Without employing marketing strategies, these sales may not have ever happened; without sales, a company cannot succeed.

Known Brands and Company Reputation: The buyers need to trust the brand before they buy. The success of a company often rests on a solid reputation. Marketing builds brand name recognition or product recall with a company. When a company reaches the high expectations of the public, its reputation stands on firmer ground. As your reputation grows, the business expands and sales increase. The reputation of any company is built through active participation in community programs, effective communication externally and externally and quality products or services, which are created or supported by marketing efforts.

Healthy Competition: Consumers gain if the market has many sellers for the same product. Marketing also fosters an environment in the marketplace for healthy completion. Marketing efforts get the word out on pricing of products and services, which not only reaches the intended consumers, but also reaches other companies competing for the consumers’ business. As opposed to companies that have a monopoly on products and services that can charge almost any price, marketing helps keep pricing competitive for a business to try to win over consumers before its competition does. Without competition, well known companies would continue to sell while lesser known companies or new companies would stand little chance of ever becoming successful. Marketing facilitates the healthy competition that allows small businesses and new businesses to be successful enter and grow in the marketplace.

Expensive: Although marketing is hugely important for a business to succeed, it can also be very expensive. In its first year, a company might spend as much as half of its sales on marketing programs. After the first year, a marketing budget can reach as much as 30 percent--sometimes more--of the annual sales. A marketing program that gives your company the best chance is a healthy mix of different forms of marketing, such as website development, public relations, print and broadcast advertising, design and printing for all print materials, trade shows and other special events.

Marketing the most preferred course in PGDM: Marketing has become the most preferred course, due to the career opportunities it offers and the growth opportunities it provides, most of the CEO’s have marketing background, and maximum companies that come for campus placements at the Accurate Institute of Management & Technology campus have vacancies for marketing profile.

How to Prepare For Group Discussion

Firstly let us understand what the Group Discussion is and why it is an important part of any admission to an institute or recruitment process of any organization.

As the name suggests the Group Discussion is a formal discussion amongst group members. Referring it to the admission process of an institute, the concept of Group Discussion was incorporated in the admission process a couple of years back because it was felt that the students in an institute selected through personal interaction without group discussion lacked some critical soft skills like interpersonal and behavioral skills. Lack of these skills reflected badly on learning of the students as learning is a collective academic endeavor which needs team work for excellence in their studies. So institutes thought to introduce group discussion in their drives to gauge group dynamic behavior of the prospective candidates which could be a tangible parameter to assess their personality traits. Since, it has not been a part of the regular academic curriculum in schools and colleges therefore students usually face a lot of problem in this area of the Selection Process.

Let us first understand the finer details of why Group Discussion is conducted.

Most institutes today are very clear about the skills and knowledge that they look for in a student while screening. That is why, Group Discussion has been a part of the Selection process for admission into most of the Business Schools.

The personality traits and skills that are usually being looked for in a Group Discussion are: Communication Skills Interpersonal Skills, Leadership Skills, Motivational Skills, Team Building Skills,Tolerance, Listening skills, Presentation Skills, Analytical, Logical skills, creativity/out-of-the-box thinking. So, it's very important to assess your current strengths in all these areas and accordingly put-in efforts to overcome your shortcomings.

Besides, body language and attitude is being given focus while GD is being conducted.

Another important reason for institutes to keep GD as an elimination round and acts as a filter to prune unwanted students lacking these skills.

In nut shell, GD is basically a methodological tool used by an institution to gauge whether a candidate has certain personality traits and/or skills that it desires in its students. Normally, the group of candidates is given a topic or a situation, given a few minutes to think about the same, and then asked to discuss it among themselves for some time. Topics can be from a wide range of issues. It could be a topic on current events, business news, sports or anything very general. The wider your reading interests, the better prepared you will be to face the group discussion.

A Group discussion tests how you function as a part of a team. Accurate Institute of Management & Technology sharing some tips for effective participation in a GD or how to prepare in a GD:

Understand - Understand the topic before attempting to contribute. Jot down all necessary details in bullet form on a piece of paper

Initiate - Take the initiative to begin the discussion, if possible, as it will give you bonus marks.

Structure/organize - Structure or organize the data or arguments logically - justify your stand with suitable and verifiable data.

Act as a leader – if the topic digresses from the main track, try to bring back the   discussion.

Act as a motivator – Try bringing all participants on board to discuss the topic but after you put your views across the group.

Assert- Be assertive not aggressive.

Articulate- Work continuously towards articulating your ideas into meaningful sentences to make the best impact. Be clear in your speech.

Use Body language - Use non-verbal communication to emphasize points as it will give more weight age to your ideas.

Listen- Be an attentive listener also so that you can collect relevant data to summarize.

Quality, not quantity matters- it's not 'how much' you say, but 'what' you say that's important.

Speech clarity – your words should be clear and loud with confidence.

To prepare for a group discussion, keep track of latest happenings and current affairs round the world. Being aware of current affairs, issues and happenings reflect our inquisitiveness to learn and know about the world we are living in. Make a habit of reading newspapers and magazines, watch interesting documentaries and profiles on television to get a wider perspective on issues.

As an individual, your intelligence, general knowledge and core competencies are measured through the aptitude test. As a team player, your ability to lead and play in team is measured in the GD.

How Do We Do IT

"Slowing economy has resulted in as low as 30 per cent drop in hiring of fresher’s in 2012 and the trend continues in 2013 too, IT giants hired very less number of students in these years. To overcome this effect we at Accurate Institute have opened our gates to start-ups and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs)."

Placement Challenge:

The biggest challenge we faced is the awareness issue about the Industry and its dynamics; students are lacking necessary skills, required to get a good job.
Solution adopted:
1. We initially in the start of the semester increased our reach to all the students, addressing them at a single platform.
2. Increased the participation of students into Training and Placement decisions.
3. Reached at the consensus about the training, method of delivery and time frame.
We started with a sole motto, “Let Lit the Fire of awareness and self-motivation into the Student’s Community”.
How Do We Do It:

According to National Employability Report, “Even though India produces more than five lakh engineers annually, only 17.45% of them are employable for the IT services sector, while a dismal 3.51% are approximately trained to be directly deployed on projects. Further, only 2.68% are employable in IT product companies, which require greater understanding of computer science and algorithms. An economy with a large percent of unemployable qualified candidate is not only inefficient, but socially dangerous. The right training, at one end, and employability assessments acting as feedback at the other, will help both in goal-setting and tracking progress to make a larger proportion of engineers in India employable.

This report is indicating towards a panic and an alarming situation for all of us the in the society, this is the phase to take action by all Industry/ Institute/ Students.

Suggested Action 1:
The corporate have to raise their hands from K12 levels to address the large student community, as this is the time where student’s career gets foundation. Corporate may conduct Road Shows, awareness Camps and some level of elementary training sessions.

Suggested Action 2:
At the Graduate level this is the utmost responsibility of the respective institute to identify the gap areas among the students when they enter very first year/semester. The extra input is required apart from their curricula. This extra input can be drawn from the industry.

Suggested Action 3:
Students should start working on their career goal in the yearly years of their education and should consider the following points:

The first and the foremost skill required is the Domain Knowledge and 5 Behavioral and Knowledge Skills which students should possess in order to increase their chances of getting a job.
1. Emotional Quotient (EQ) -- More than the intelligence quotient (IQ), it is EQ which employers hunt for in prospective candidates. This is so as high EQ helps individuals build and maintain relations with co-workers and increases level of sensitivity towards others. “People who maintain a calm composure during tense situations can handle situations better and find solutions to problems unlike those who get hyper easily,” Companies look for a EQ: IQ ratio of approximately 80:20 in potential candidates, as they believe IQ can be built, but EQ in often in-built.

2. Communication skills: Students should have a sound ability to communicate with others. Communication is the key in any organization and a good set of inter-personal skills bring about a degree of transparency within the organizational culture.

3. Foreign language proficiency: In an era when 40-50% of the turnovers of all big firms come from international markets, ability to communicate in a foreign language gives a natural edge to a candidate. Fluency in English goes without saying. But command over French, German, Spanish, Japanese or Chinese gives an added advantage. So students can use their free time to enroll in foreign language classes.

4. Digital Savvy: Students need to be savvy about computers and technology. But they should also be gung ho about working in a virtual environment through the telephone, internet, video conferencing etc. Experts say lot of deals and discussions take place through a virtual environment and candidates need to be comfortable and confident about enacting their roles through a virtual set-up, rather than always insisting on a face-to-face meeting.

5. Sensitivity towards different time-zones: Especially true for the IT, ITes, KPO/BPO, Automotive and other sectors where a large chunk of the employee and customer base resides in different time-zones.
